Many families take great joy and pride in caring for dependent elders or others with developmental disabilities. As many as one in five (20%) of adults in the United States are caring for an elder family member or friend. There may come a time, however when travel plans, emergencies or “taking a break” makes temporary, respite care not only expedient but a necessary blessing. In such circumstances, Heritage at Framingham can provide 24 hour care seven days a week, managing even persons with memory loss due to Alzheimer’s or other dementias in our Homestead community.
Respite care offers a break for families and caregivers, and these “respites” are often beneficial to the health of the caregivers. In a recent survey conducted by the Commonwealth Fund many families caring for older or dependent adults reported fair or poor health.
Respite helps to sustain family caregiver health and wellbeing, often avoiding or delaying referrals to congregate care centers such as nursing homes and assisted living residences. Another research report showed that interim, or respite care may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages.
“Caring for the caregiver” is yet one more way that Heritage at Framingham demonstrates its commitment to the community we serve.
Respite, or interim care may also be a very effective way for families to learn more about the benefits of living at Heritage at Framingham. Sometimes, the best way to learn about a residence is to experience it for a week or two.
